Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm lives in the blood stream and heart of your dog and cat, and is transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworm is a potentially fatal disease and therefore preventative treatments are essential.

Puppies should be constantly protected against heartworm from 8-12 wks of age, for their entire life. Most owners opt for a baby heartworm injection starting at 12 weeks of age.

If heartworm prevention is only started after 6 months of age you require a veterinary blood test before preventative care begins.

Most owners opt for a single once a year heartworm injection given at the same time as their annual vaccination. This option allows us to remind you with a postcard once a year so you never forget. Other options include spot-on protection using monthly advocate or revolution, or monthly tablets such as Heartgard or Sentinel.
